Without further ado, say hi to Hugh Jessiman.

Drafted 12th overall by the Rangers in 2003, Hugh Jessiman, (nicknamed “Huge Specimen” by some fans) has the glorious distinction of being the only 2003 first round pick to have never played in an NHL game. Just in case you’re wondering who all these glorious other first round picks are, oh, only the likes of Marc Andre Fleury (first overall) Eric Staal (second overall) Thomas Vanek (fifth overall) Eric Fehr (18th overall) Ryan Getzlaf (19th overall) and bringing up the rear, Corey Perry (28th) and Shawn Bell (30th).
After three years at Dartmouth College of the NCAA, Jessiman went pro, starting the 2005 season with the Hartford Wolf Pack, the NY Rangers’ AHL affiliate. Until the 2008-2009 season, Jessiman bounced between the Wolf Pack and their ECHL affiliate Charlotte Checkers until he was traded to the Nashville Predators on October 30, 2008 in return for future considerations.
Now, Jessiman is with the Milwaulkee Admirals of the AHL, with 41 games played in this AHL season, 8 goals, 6 assists, and 38 penalty minutes. Having never seen him play, my gut feeling from his stats is that he’s just an inconsistent player, and probably doomed to a lifetime in the AHL.
He isn’t afraid to pick a fight, as seen here:
and although he doesn’t score consistantly huge numbers, he does get enough to count, some of them being awfully pretty:
And THAT, folks, is where NYR 2003 first round pick Hugh Jessiman is now.
