Apologies for the fact that THTM has gone loosely dormant. I’ve just made a move to Boston to go to (more) school, and have been running around like a chicken with my various appendages out of joint trying to haul boxes and find a summer job and all of that good stuff.

BUT YES, let us talk about hockey.

FAILBOATS, the FAILBOATS WHAT? I refuse to believe that David Krejci is the be-all end all of every Bruins game ever. Don’t get me wrong, I love the shorter half of this brain trust just as much as ever, but I find it hard to believe a team that can fight through missing Savard is now falling all over themselves because of missing Krejci….. at least physically. Perhaps mentally the blow was harder, but it still seems a little far fetched to me.

It seems to me though (brilliance from Sarah’s house last night,) that the Bruins have two sorts of players, those that set the tone, and those that just follow the general trend of the team. I think last night it was Ryder I was calling out as a team sponge-if things are going generally well, he’s all up in that doing well (and scoring) thing. If things aren’t going so well, Ryder is generally useless. In short, he somehow can’t seem to change his own fate, and has to rely on guys like Savard and Krejci who can usually force change to get anything going for him.

Granted, the idea’s a little crazy, but I’ve seen it on sports teams that I’ve played on-some people just really can’t make that bad-game to good-game transition for themselves and some can. Others can’t transition, but will work like hell at it, which usually helps the rest of the team somehow.

———
And in the actualfax AWESOME of the day, go back and check out this entry from back when I was in Hershey working on my thesis. I had found record of a Lois Fegan reporting on Bears games and facing issues with being allowed proper access (at least initially).

As you can see in that post, I had poked around some and tried to find her, but never found anything conclusive.

Instead, just today she found ME!

Here’s the comment she left on that post:

Yes, there is a Lois Fegan Farrell alive and well but no sister Mabel. I live in Hershey, Pa. I am ninety-three years old the widow of newsman Gene Farrell. I no longer cover sports but do have wonderful memories of those days and was thrilled to have picked up on your site. It is such an honor to know that one has been immortalized for a job that was so enjoyable. If anyone else has any memories of those days be sure to drop me an email (LJFreelance@juno.com).

I’m already scheming trying to get an e-oral history. If only I hadn’t left the Mid-Atlantic already!

(oh and also, Finland beating the USA in the WC? SOLD!)

Mats Zuccarello Aasen, the Norwegian Hobbit Wizard signing with the New York Rangers.
If you haven’t heard of this kid, go learn about him. He’s with MoDo in Sweden right now, and his big moment of fame came earlier this year when there was some sort of dare/offhanded comment that if his team won he would kiss the goalie AND HE DID IT. Of course now I can’t find any reference to it whatsoever, but trust me it happened. While I look, here have a video.

haHA! Found it!

(The caption in translation reads: “Before the match I asked him if we were fighting a bit of fun, but he is so bad in English that he thought I asked if I could kiss him. Then he said to me in that case had to do it after the game if we won … and then it became so,” says Zuccarello.)

I’m going to go all MetricJulie and start calling him MZA. Don’t tell the Finns.

The Hershey Bears stomping Bridgeport 7-2 in the third game of the series after a few close ones, and Andrew Gordon getting the hat trick and the first star.

You tell ‘em, Gordo.

Less Awesome:

MZA signing with the Rangers. Dammit, why not a team I care even a little about?

This smarmy looking little Swede.

Clownshoulders, quit bringing your team back from the brink of destruction. Ugh. (just fyi, this is a really wierd playoff run for me, as I’m happy Fehr scored, but would sort of like to see Team NBC Loves Ovechkin go through absolute meltdown. As a fledgling Bruins fan, though, it seems odd to be cheering for the Habs. I know, let’s go with a rocks fall everyone dies approach.)

The fact that right now it looks like the Bears are going to play the River Rats in the next round of playoffs and my innards are going to die a little because ZOMG BEARS but ZOMG OSALA. There may be tears.

This makes me sadface.

Fail:

Tuukka Rask, losing the very first playoff game he’s ever seen, uh, played in.

Alex Ovechkin and Tarik El Bashir, the Washington Post’s hack reporter for this amazing tweet:@tarikelbashir: “Ovechkin said he noticed Halak’s hand shaking while drinking water after Fehr’s goal. Ovechkin said it was clear the Habs G was nervous.” BECAUSE HANDS NEVER SHAKE FROM FATIGUE OR ANYTHING ELSE. sheesh.

Bandwagon fans in Verizon Center being douchebags in the 400s. This was my picture from about a month ago, but my friend Mel who sits right there in 409 on a more regular basis says that it’s becoming an epidemic. Even when you ask them nicely to sit back, they get all uppity. Don’t make me write a “How To Not Be A Jerk In Your Seat” post.

The Phoenix Coyotes yesterday not only played their first playoff game ever, but WON it.

Just let that soak in for a minute.

This is the team that was the punchline for things last season. They were a gimme win for most everyone. They’ve gone through bankruptcy, NHL ownership, fan led revolt to keep them there, fought through a surprisingly winning season to get to the playoffs, and they just beat the Red Wings in Game One.

Not to mention a packed house and an epically successful whiteout.

And because I’m a homer, a quote from Sami Lepisto:

People kept thinking, ‘They can’t go for that long. They’ll go down at some point,’ … And we didn’t. It’s been so fun. The mentality is awesome. There are no superstars, but it’s awesome playing here, everyone has come together. We have fun coming to the rink every day and that reflects in the way we play. The sky is the limit for us.

No matter who wins the big shiny thing at the end of this, y’all are winners, from the players right up through the fans. Make a run of it, guys.

(P.S. I’m going to be working on editing in more of my 400+ images of the Yotes at Kettler/Verizon Center this week, so keep an eye on Flickr.)

(P.P.S. Bears won v. the Tiggers in OT yesterday, after some, um, iffy reffing regarding legality of high sticks and goals and so forth. Holtby may or may not be starting in this next game, after some shaky bits.)

Hey NHL,

You and I, we usually get along pretty well. I mean, despite that whole Gary Bettman schlorping Sid and Ovie thing and the Matt Cooke Fiasco. We’ve had some disagreements on you trying to sell me pink crap before, but I thought you had listened.

image courtesy of @danawalker click to enlarge

NHL, I’m thinking that with this one, we might need to um, go see other people for a while.

It’s great of you to let me know that “NHL Prints make the perfect addition to any ‘man-cave’ for the NHL fan,” because sheeesh, was I worried that the prints of my AHL photos might have made my apartment too girly. Oh… wait. NHL, did you know I’m a girl?

Oh man, I’m sorry. I know I was wearing a hat when we met, but I assumed you’d have figured it out. No? You thought because of my wall decorations I was a dude?

Seriously, NHL. I know I harp on this over and over and over again, but what’s your insistance on being so dude-centric? I’m willing to bet that if you were to find a female fan, she’d have more photos of her favorite player saved on her computer than a guy would, so logic would then say that perhaps you should be marketing IMAGES FOR SALE to the FEMALES as well.

And really, this is getting old and kind of tiring. Get a damn focus group. Get a damn woman in the marketing department with half a brain. Get a damn CLUE, NHL, and quit doing crap like this. All it does is make the women you want to buy stuff from you sigh in exasperation and throw their hands in the air.

Quit it. Just freakin’ quit it.

Esteemed THTM readers, I would like you to meet one person you should know and one you probably already do. I give you……

<img src="http://www.wasps.co.uk/uploads/images/thumbnails/w-Wasps6326Squad1.jpg"
London Wasp James Haskell and Boston Bruin Shawn Thornton.

Now, the jury is still out as to whether they’re long lost brothers or just BFFMANFRIENDSOMG, but there’s definitely something a little freaky going on. For example, they both like being photographed in safety gear:

Even if you’re gracious enough to give the safety gear a bye, there’s still the issue of the Ed Hardy Crap they both seem to have bought stock in. Maybe it was a cross-ocean conspiracy to make sure that nobody lost money on it…..

Thorts and Haskell</center<, tooling it up like a good bromantic couple would.

For good measure, the action shot:

So I leave it to you to make the ultimate decision, but I say it’s just wierd enough to be TOTALLY STINKING AWESOME.

First off, congrats to @amandafortier for her new post on View From My Seats. It’s always great to see another girl blogger. However, her first choice of topic was puzzling if not downright troubling. Again, we’re hashing out the puckbunny issue.

Now I think you all know where I stand, so I won’t beat that horse again, but here’s my question… As far as I know, this discussion has been dormant for at least a month, so if she really wants the sides to stop squabbling and step back for the good of the female fanbase, why dredge it up again so far after the fact? Why stir the pot?

Also, for as much as Ms Fortier seems to paint a middle ground for herself, I can’t help but notice that while she links to the Psycho Puck Lady blog , she neglects to mention @dani3boyz or myself as she refers to the other side of the argument. Because the two of us are well known sides of this argument on Twitter, this omission seems like either a lack of research or a desire to ignore the side of the ongoing discussion Ms. Fortier personally dislikes. Although I may not be the most moderate voice in this conversation, I believe all of the current positions should be heard from the mouths of those who take them.

I believe as well that at some point, my message has gotten convoluted…or I’ve possibly mellowed a little in my old age. I am not simply anti-person. I could care less what you actually do with yourself. I am, however, extremely anti- painting a whole diverse group with the same brush, and with the amount of attention the press seems to want to give the puckbunnies, that’s what I’ve taken my stand against. Do the bunnies exist? Yes. Are all of us among them? No. But from the bunny-biased publicity given to female hockey fans, that’s all that seems to exist. For those of you who haven’t been a female sports fan, it’s hard sometimes. If people see you merely as another man-happy ball of hormones it gets even harder.

If the mainstream media and larger blogs would portray a wider variety of “typical” female fans, we could more than likely quash this issue once and for all, but I don’t feel that bringing it back up and presenting only one side verbatim can help in the long run.

This <del datetime="2010-03-15T03:21:16+00:00">Week</del> Month:
Awesome:

Brad Marchand for getting called up to the big B’s, thus reuniting the Brado and Vlado show.

Now all they need is to speed Ned Lucacevic back through the ranks as he was signed back to the Peebs last week, and we can have the Brado, Vlado and Nedo Epic Bromance back together. The win, I just can’t take it…..

Ben Bishop, a 6′8″ goalie playing for Peoria.

Dan Carcillo, for shoving Greg Devorski. You tell ‘em, Dano.

Less Awesome:

Kari Lehtonen being traded to the Dallas Stars. The Stars are faily, but they’re slightly less known for being faily than the Thrashers.

Marty Turco, for creating the fail that poor Kari has to go try to clean up over and over again. Shame on you, Turcs. You’re making my car named after you look bad.

Hannu Toivonen, traded to the Blackhawks/Icehogs. The parent team is a step up from the Blues, but is Rockford a step up from Peoria?

Figuring out how to use the Dragulator with hockey player faces.

Fail:

Oskar Osala to Carolina for Joe Corvo and someone who doesn’t even freaking matter because OSKAR OSALA for JOE CORVO WTF GMGM WE ARE DONE.

Matt Cooke, after that hit on Savard, for somehow not being flayed alive by the Bruins, the NHL brass, or anyone else… yet. Just wait, I’m sure it’s coming.

The NHL powers-that-be (ahem CAMPBELL ahem) for not thinking that the Savard hit was bad enough to punish Cooke for. Consistency? Consistently BAD.

Alex Ovechkin, for bashing the crap out of Brian Campbell.

The Caps homers, for immediately jumping to the DON’T PICK ON OVECHKIN FDSIJFWEFIOE side of things. I’m not gonna say that “they should have done this,” but judging by the shape Campbell looked to be in, I think chucking Ovie from the game was not a bad idea.

Steve Downie. Downie Soft, that knee thing on Crosby? Really? I wouldn’t be so cocky if I had gotten the crap kicked out of me by Jay Beagle in a preseason game.

George Parros, hit in the face with a puck during practice and taken to the hospital. Reports say he’s fine, just lacerated a little.

Blah blah blah NBC blah blah blah hockey coverage blah blah blah curling….WHIIIIIIIINE.

Okay. Now we’ve got that out of the way and the whaaambulence has left.

Take a gander at the unevenness of the scores that appeared in this first round of women’s Olympic hockey games:
Canada v. Slovakia: 18-0
USA v. China: 12-1
Canada v. Switzerland: 10-1
USA v. Russia: 13-1
Canada v. Sweden: 13-1

And this is only a partial list, leaving out the scores that were still five-point-shutouts. These are ONLY the bloodbaths.

The question that’s been circulating lately is this: Should there be a “Mercy Rule” in women’s hockey?

My answer to this? Yes. There should absolutely be a mercy rule, but there should be a mercy rule across the board for the men AND the women. However, I don’t think it should be a game-ending mercy rule, but some sort of re-organization of play that either gives the weaker team an advantage or cripples the stronger team.

The thinking is this:
Although in the Olympics countries are sending their best athletes, especially in women’s hockey there is bound to be a disparity between (for examples) China’s best, and the USA’s best.

The history of women’s hockey in the USA and Canada closely mirrors the ups and downs of feminist progress. It was huge in the 1920s and 1930s, but declined through World War Two and through the 1960s, being “little more than a curiosity.” 1n the 1960s, women and girls attempting to join boys teams were generally rejected, and it wasn’t until Title Nine in 1980 that women’s hockey began at colleges, and it wasn’t until 1993 that it was accepted by the NCAA as a sport. Nevertheless, these schools are where most female players really started to hone their game and women’s hockey started to rise to prominence.

The first international women’s hockey tournament was held only about 20 years ago in 1990, with eight countries playing in the Women’s World Ice Hockey Championship: Canada, USA, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, West Germany and Japan. It wasn’t until 8 years later in 1998 that women’s hockey was added to the Olympics, in Nagano Japan.

In essence, women’s hockey is still INCREDIBLY young, and women’s Olympic hockey is even younger. Because of that, the dominant teams right now are going to be from the countries that can feed the most money into their Olympic programs and assist their teams in training and traveling to play year-round… like Canada and the USA. There’s enough public awareness of hockey in these country that these women don’t generally have jobs, and can live off of sponsorship money while training to stay at the top of the game.

When these women compete against other teams who don’t have as much funding, or against players who can’t devote their entire lives to training because they have to hold down a job in their native country to keep food on the table, obviously, there’s going to be a disparity in level of play. Add to that the fact that in some countries women in sports are still looked at as oddities or have other stigmas attached, and there may be a smaller pool of talent to even draw from.

A girl who played hockey at an early age for a pastime in a non-hockey-country may have been encouraged by her parents and/or culture to give it up for marriage, school, a job, or any other number of things. If, for example, a British female hockey player has to find time to train AND hold down a job because she doesn’t get monetary support from the country, AND there aren’t companies beating down her door to give her multi-million-dollar sponsorships, this woman is not only forced to stay in her job to fund equipment, ice time, gym time and the like, she’s also forced to FIND that time somewhere around her job, school, or other commitments. In the US and Canada, between sponsorships and the backing of the country, most players don’t HAVE a “real job” and commit all of their time to training and becoming better at their sport.

Does each country send their best athletes? Yes. But are all women’s international hockey programs created equal? Positively NOT. And it doesn’t seem fair to put some of the smaller or lesser funded programs up against the juggernauts of the USA and Canada and force them to suffer through 12-0 blowouts.

As an athlete who’s been involved in both sides of blowout scores, when you’re down that much, you’re not learning anymore, you’re just frustrated and ready to start taking cheap penalties. When you’re up that much, you’re also not learning much-it’s like being the predestined Harlem Globetrotters, and it feels a little silly.

However, after reading a 10 point spread, to institute a mercy rule that takes away a player from the winning team and make them play down a body would keep the game moving, keep it interesting, and perhaps, create learning opportunities for everyone.

Also, organizing the original brackets in each tournament so that the lower-ranked teams got a chance to play each other would give teams like Slovakia and China a chance to play a real game, instead of facing a 13-0 shutout against the USA or Canada.

And someday, when I start working for the IIHF or the IOC, that’s exactly what I’ll suggest.
